Regional stakeholders have decided to gather around a subject that matters to them and the industry. We had an introductory meeting on the 23rd October as a first face to face contact, to present the WAPECC team, to introduce the steering committee members and to go through the working guidelines of the committee.
On Monday December 3rd 2018, The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Renewable Energies announced that the Ivory coast would build Africa’s first floating solar power plant.
Floating PV structures allow normally more densely populated coastal areas to be serviced without sacrificing farm or urban land. An interesting approach and a first for West Africa where the Seychelles are also planning a similar project.

The GCF have pledged $27 Million as an incentive for local companies in Burkina Faso to supply 100 villages with power from solar mini grids. The “Yeleen Rural Electrification Project”, as it is known, is seen to be a good candidate for replicability and one that could encourage more private sector involvement in similar rural-electrification projects in Burkina Faso as well as the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. This investment is also likely to mobilise funds from the European Union, the Africa Development Bank, private investors and others.

The team on experts dedicated to WAPECC for technical work on the program is now known. Steering committee sessions are starting soon. The call for papers is also open to collect abstracts from potential speakers.

We are pleased and honoured to announce that the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Renewable Energies of Cote d’Ivoire has sent his support to host the inaugural West Africa Power and Energy Cooperation Conference in Abidjan.
Our team has flown out to Dakar to meet with the government authorities and key industry stakeholders there.
Outcome: It has been decided to set up a steering committee of experts to validate the subjects and sessions for WAPECC and to ensure the best content will be delivered.
Thank you to all who attended WAPECC’s launch ceremony; well attended by many of the West African energy sector’s key stakeholders. Mr Cissé Sabati, Director General, representing the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and renewable energies and Mr Stephane Aka Anghui the Deputy Director of Cabinet at the Ministry of African Integration applauded this and the intent to encourage strategies to unlock investment and fund much needed energy projects, addressing the problem of energy access in the region.
Mr Sabati said: “This platform will allow discussion with financial and technical partners from across the globe with which we expect to close some deals and obtain funding for our projects.”
